This Elderberry has purple-black finely cut foliage in spring through summer. Pink, fragrant cluster blooms appear in early summer followed in fall with a black-red berry. Is a good replacement for Japanese Maple in northern climates. Needs full sun and cool temps to maintain dark colored foliage, too much shade will make it convert to a light green. Prefers moist soil but will tolerate dry conditions once established. Will tolerate acidic or alkaline soils. Is very cold hardy. Pruning in early spring recommended. Used as a high hedge, perennial garden, entry garden, mass planting, naturalizing or an accent plant. Deer resistant.
