Nasturtium is the common name for the genus tropaeolum, The genus nasturtium is the botanical name for a genus of water cresses. Tropaeolum is native to Central and South America. Nasturtium literally means “nose-twister” or nose-tweaker.”

Nasturtiums were imported to the Old World as a vegetable because the Incas used the plants as a salad and medicinal herb. Though the plant is widely used for ornamental purposes today, it also adds a colorful appeal to salads.

Nasturtium is useful as a pest-repellant. They repel squash bugs, cucumber beetles and caterpillars.
